PSE

Also known as: Pagos Seguros en Línea

Definition

PSE (Pagos Seguros en Línea) is the most-used interbank online payment system in Colombia. It lets shoppers pay e-commerce sites by debiting their bank account directly.

LATAM context

PSE is operated by ACH Colombia. When you shop online in Colombia and choose "pay with PSE," you get redirected to your bank's page to authorize the debit. It's equivalent to a direct ACH transfer with the account holder's authorization.

Concrete example

On a Bancolombia statement, a PSE purchase shows up as: "DEBITO PSE - MERCADOLIBRE COLOMBIA - REF PSE: 12345678 - 250,000".

How it shows up on your bank statement

On Colombian statements, PSE payments appear as debits labeled 'PSE' followed by the name of the merchant or entity that charged you. The transaction ID shown on screen when you pay doesn't always make it into the statement, so reconciling usually relies on matching date, amount and merchant name.

Frequently asked questions about PSE

Is PSE a bank or a payment method?

Neither exactly: it's the platform that lets you pay online by debiting your bank account directly, with no card involved. The money leaves your bank, but the merchant initiates the charge through PSE.

Why does a PSE payment show up under a name I don't recognize?

Because many merchants charge through an intermediary gateway, and it's that gateway's name that gets recorded. It's one of the most common reasons a line item looks unidentified when reconciling.
